PROBLEM

Most haunted XR games are dark, intense, and not suitable for all ages. We saw an opportunity to create a cute, welcoming environment that keeps the excitement of ghost hunting while making the experience fun and approachable for everyone.

RESULTS

90% of players reacted positively to the cute environment

70% of players completed the first ghost encounter without guidance

80% said they would play again

85% of players quickly understood the goal of the game

Bringing Playfulness Into XR

Ghost Hunter began as an exploration into how XR can feel friendly, fun, and accessible for all ages. Instead of creating another dark or intense haunted experience, we set out to design a world filled with cute ghosts, clear interactions, and a guided flow that helps players feel confident as they explore.

Our personas, Bella, a player who prefer stress free games, and Tony, an XR newcomer who prefers simple, approachable interactions, helped shape our direction. Their needs highlighted the importance of gentle onboarding, readable actions, and an environment that reduces fear while encouraging curiosity. The result is a lighthearted XR game designed for comfort, confidence, and playful discovery.

Technologies & Assets Behind the Experience

To build Ghost Hunter, we combined a set of tools that allowed us to prototype interactions quickly while keeping the experience friendly and approachable. Unity served as the main engine for building the 3D environment, integrating gameplay logic, and testing movement and interaction patterns. We used the Meta Quest 3 for deployment and playtesting, ensuring the experience felt fluid and comfortable in an actual headset. GitHub supported version control and team collaboration throughout production.

Alongside development tools, we used Rodin and Google Gemini to create custom ghost models and refine their personality. The stylized bedroom kit from the Unity Asset Store set the tone for our soft, approachable environment, while AI generated sound effects and background music helped create a playful, all ages atmosphere. These assets worked together to create a cohesive XR experience that feels charming, intuitive, and easy for new players to enjoy.

What’s Next

Ghost Hunter opened the door to a playful style of XR interaction, and there are many directions we hope to explore next. Expanding the world with additional rooms and themed areas would allow players to explore more environments and discover new types of ghost encounters. Giving ghosts unique personalities and behaviours would add depth to the experience, making each interaction feel more dynamic and memorable.

We also see opportunities to introduce new weapons, like a slipper or a holy cross, to add variety and humor to gameplay. In the long term, an open world structure that connects relaxing themed spaces could turn Ghost Hunter into a larger, more immersive world that encourages exploration, curiosity, and replayability.
